1st day of the Mozambique Fashion Week ( MFW)2011

It wasn't until Mozambique's first lady Maria Da luz Guebuza thanked all the sponsors and the organisers of Mozambique Fashion week ,DDB Mozambique and Sirius Production SA , that the gold double doors of the Standard bank building, Baixa da Cidade Maputo was opened wide, for the beginning of the MFW young designers competition.  Designers had to show their skills with a 6 garment range.
Black made its way into most collections with some designers using only black for their range. Capolana, Mozambique's most consumed fabric was mixed with raw material, whilst some designers dressed it up with chiffon blouse. The most successful execution of the Capolana was done on merit. ‘Some designers try to go for the Eurocentric look, rightfully so if you want to sell, but it has to be done with the consideration of the intrinsic quality rather than external factors. The fabric (capolana) loses its edge and is then at a disadvantage” said Bryan Ramkilawan, Ceo of Cape Town fashion week, and MFW 2011 young designers judge.  The more successful executions were made by those designers that embraced the fabric, designers who allowed the fabric to be the focal point of the garment. Some did so by using the fabric as a trim to enhance the garments. Miguel Merbey's interpretation of a pin up girl provided another perspective. J.C , a Congolese model who's made his name modeling in South Africa and Africa's biggest ramps told stylelove.co.za ' The designers are quite promising and I believe that Mozambique is witnessing some of its biggest future exports.  Men were put into tailored pieces with different shape lapels. Mandarin collars dominated the top parts of the jackets, for a rather hard men's wear look on the first day of the Vodacom MFW 2011. Celia Pale's Corsets could be worn with almost everything from a corset dress, gathered at the waist, a basic corset dress to a corset piece worn with pants for the teen drama queen. Models Charne King said that she has seen raw talent and Maria Paymans from Cape Town said that she enjoyed wearing some of the garment from the Collection of models.  The first day of the emerging young designers competition, closed off with a leotard story from Amadine Malikanwa. The 15 designers will have to wait for the rest of the designers to show their ranges before the judges have their last words. Dereck and Elizabeth Galloway from Elizabeth Galloway academy said that they were looking for an eye for design and someone that could take their eye forward and make that into a commercially viable product.
